Tsipras and Stratoulis (economics advisor in the Syriza party) go to England to meet David Cameron. They go to the hotel and open up the closet to put their clothes in and see a mouse.

“Ρε συ”, λέει ο Τσίπρας, “ξέρεις πως είναι ο ποντικός στα αγγλικά για να πάρουμε τηλέφωνο στη ρεσεψιόν να τους πούμε ότι βρήκαμε ένα;”
“Dude,” Tsipras says, “do you know how to say ‘mouse’ in English so we can tell the front desk that we found it?”

“Όχι” λέει ο Στρατούλης, “εσύ”;
“No,” says Stratoulis, ”do you know?”

“Ούτε εγώ” λέει ο Τσίπρας, “αλλά άσε, θα πάρω εγώ… εγώ να εξηγηθώ!”
“Me neither,” Tsipras says, “but look, I’ll make the call … and I’ll explain!”

Tsipras: “Yes, Reception?”
Front Desk: “Yes, how can I help you?”
Tsipras: “Do you know Tom and Jerry?”
Front Desk: “Yes, of course.”
Tsipras: “Jerry is here!”

(The Joke here is that Tsipras hasn’t been speaking speak very good English in his interviews with foreign TV networks.)

The Merkozy era is over. So how to label the partnership of Angela Merkel and François Hollande? Merging first names to make Frangela is too familiar for leaders who barely know each other. Homer is too American (or worse, Greek). Merkollande sounds too close to Merkozy. That leaves just the shortened Merde, which at least sums up the state of the euro.
The Economist’s ”Charlemagne” Column
(Prior knowledge required: Merde means “poop” in French)

As Merkel approached, Obama beamed, reached out his hand and said, “Angela.”

She responded: “Mr. President.”

Things got interesting when Obama asked her, “How have you been?”

Merkel simply shrugged and said nothing.

In response Obama said, “Well, you have a few things on your mind.”

I just learned that the world lost Chuck Brown on Wednesday. Although the go-go music that Chuck pioneered will always represent the sound of Washington DC, I’m personally grateful to New Orleans and DJ Soul Sister’s incredible nights at Mimi’s-in-the-Marigny for introducing me to some infectious songs that got everyone moving:

What I hadn’t fully realized was how many of my favorite songs and artists Chuck Brown influenced directly: Thievery Corporation, E.U’s Da Butt from School Daze, Jill Scott, and Amerie’s 1 Thing. And I’m not much of a Gucci Mane fan, but this beat is tight. Thanks to this blog for pointing me towards some of these.

Alexis Tsipras, head of Greek Syriza party, on CNN. I don’t disagree with anything he says, but he sounds entirely delusional.
